The inaugural round of the Australian Touring Car Racing (TCR) series kicked off over the weekend of the 17th-19th of May at Sydney Motorsport Park. There has been an extreme hype on both sides of the Tasman towards this new class which makes it even more exciting!

The deal came together within a week of actually racing. We had a lot to prepare and get ready, but everyone did a fantastic job to pull together and make it happen. We came away with a top 10 finish, a straight car, huge improvements and smiles on our faces.
Teaming up with Alliance Auto Sport run by Matt Stone Racing (MSR) and Jason Bright (X V8 Supercar Driver) in Volkswagen GTI’s I knew I was in great hands and the best team to learn and grow with. I was super excited to get the call up from Matt and Frank from MSR and lock in the first two rounds of the new TCR series. I didn’t have the chance to go testing and get comfortable in the car and I had never raced on any Australian tracks before, so I certainly had my work cut out for me! But I was ready to take on any challenge thrown my way.

I spent as much time as I could on a simulator before I flew to Australia which helped me to learn the track and how the car would handle, being a front wheel drive and slick tyres its very different to anything I have raced before.

Friday morning, I had a lot of media commitments, Sunrise did live TV interviews, newspapers interviewed us and people pulled us left and right to talk to media outlets. I then had the chance to walk the track with Jason. He’s raced there for longer than I have been alive and gave me some really great pointers which helped me throughout the weekend. Finally, it was time to strap in and drive! We had 2 practice sessions that afternoon. Every time I got in the car, I felt more comfortable letting it move underneath me and improved my lap times.
Qualifying was on Saturday morning where we qualified 16th, it wasn’t ideal but I’m a racer and was confident I would move forward in the race later that afternoon. Matt spent time with me between every session to look over mine and Jason’s data, which really pin points your strong and weak spots. I took everything on board and applied it in the race. The start process is tricky as we have launch control, along with basically doing a hill start at the same time. I got off the line ok, but almost spun on the second turn which put me on the back foot all race. I drove hard right to the end to finish 13th while Jason took out the team’s first race win!
Saturday morning was filled with meet and greets and more media before a quick turnaround between our final races. We rolled out for our second race and sponsors had the opportunity to walk the grid before our race start. I passed another competitor early on but struggled to stop the car. I played with our in-car brake bias’s. I locked my front wheels dropping back behind the car I had passed. I quickly made the ground back up and whilst trying to pass them again I locked up, stopping in the sand and causing a safety car. I was kicking myself because I don’t normally make mistakes like that, but the brake adjustments caught me out. I set some really competitive times, but now I was a lap down bringing it home in 15th.

I had learnt my lesson and won’t make that mistake again! The final race was the best of the weekend, passing more cars, setting better lap times and keeping up the consistency.

I crossed the line 11th an due to a penalty further up the field I officially finished 10th. This placed me 13th overall for the weekend and Jason 4th.
It was a huge weekend of learning! A new car and driving style, slick tyres, track and working with a new team and an opportunity I am extremely grateful for. I can’t thank Matt Stone Racing and his team for working so hard behind the scenes to help me get here and guide me through the weekend and also TCR Australia, Actron Air, MIR racegear and Unit for their help and support.
I fly back to Auckland for a week then back to the Gold Coast to work on the car, get the seat right and prepare for Round 2 at Phillip Island in a month’s time. We are working hard to continue to find more funding to be able to finish the series. I’m really looking forward to getting back in the car in mixing it further up the field!
