The First round of the final SsangYong Actyon Racing series kicked off over the weekend of the 27th-29th of October.

We were asked to be a support class at the Hampton Downs 501. I have been working hard over the winter on my fitness, finding sponsors and getting every last tenth out of my Waikato race ute. We experienced the extremes of weather conditions from showers and heavy rain to pools of standing water, then beautiful sunshine. Finishing on the podium multiple times I have set the bench mark for my season and banked championship points early on.
We turned up for Fridays practice feeling positive about the weekend ahead. We knew both myself and the Race ute were ready to race. As the rain continued to fall all our practices bar one were wet, I was in the top 5 fastest on the time sheets, but when the sun came out I only just scrapped into the top 10. We needed to find some speed!
Qualifying was early Saturday morning I found some clean air and set a good time, but not good enough and qualified 10th. I was happy with how the ute felt the day before so I knew I could push harder in the race and move forward. Our race was delayed as the rain was dangerously heavy. Eventually we were sent out and I got off to a great start and soon found myself 3 wide into turn one and up to 6th place! I was pushed wide and off track, mud sprayed completely over my car and for a spilt second I lost sight! Holding onto the steering and foot flat I kept hard into the pedal, unfortunately I lost all the positions I had just made. The slippery track made it tough to pass as I moved forward and finished in 9th place.

Race 2 was later that afternoon and the clouds started to clear, we made a team decision and decided to run with our dry set-up. The race line as dry and fast, but a millimetres either side and it was wet and slippery.

This was the reverse top 10 so I stared from P2, I was determined to run away with the win, but the boys had different plans! We all raced incredibly closely, any wrong moves were costly on the one car width wide track and I finished in 4th place. Even though I had improved from the day before I was still disappointed with my result. I worked with Cameron and we put a plan in motion for Sunday!
It was a beautiful day! We had prepped the car the night before and only had to set tyre pressures before the race. This grid was set on fastest overall race time which meant I started 4th. Right from the word go I was racey and fast! I couldn’t have asked for a better handling car. I made my way to the front and then the lead! With one lap to go I put my head down and pushed on. The boys behind me worked together to reel me back in through my slip-stream. Out of the last corner they sucked me in and split either side. Pipped on the line by .089 of a second and absolutely a dead heat for second they went to a photo finish and decided to award us both second place points. What a race!
It was out of the car for interviews and straight back in! This was the final race and between the top 5 it could be anyones outright win for the weekend, as we were all that close on points. I was fast right out the gate and quickly moved into third place. The other top 2 and I started to pull away from the field. As the sun broke through the clouds and the track got hotter I started to lose some of my speed, I held on cross the line in third. However due to other altercations between drivers I finished in second place again.

We are still waiting on calculations for the overall round results, but from my calculations I finished the weekend in second place overall.

I cannot thank Gary Pederson and his team, especially Cameron Rydon enough for their mentoring, help and spanner work all weekend they were faultless.
I also want to thank my new sponsors that have come on-board. Porter Hire, Re-Surfacing Systems Waikato and The Drug Detection Agency and to Alison from Storey Sport for getting me race fit! Without all of you and others my racing would not be possible, I appreciate your help and support.
Finally I have some fantastic news, thanks to Porter Hire in particular I will not only be making my debut, but I will become the first female ever to race in the New Zealand V8 Ute Series. This is the first weekend in December. I am now currently in Australia for the Aussie Driver Search Competition as a finalist then fly back and race at the V8 Supercars at Pukekohe this weekend back in my SsangYong.
