The third round of the Australian TCR Series was held at the very new Bend Motorsport Park in South Australia over the 12th to 14th of July. It was a close call to even making the round with passport issues a few days before, but we made it and were amped to get back on track!
I was super pumped about the weekend, I always look forward to getting back behind the wheel. It was another new track to learn and keep the momentum and speed going we had from Phillip island. Everyone has talked about The Bend since it’s opening, it’s the newest track in Australia and is a world leading facility with Rydges hotel on the straight, drift karting and among other things a rally course to top it off. It was great to finally get out there friday even though it was in tricky conditions with the rain falling and wind blowing a gale. I was really impressed by the grip level we had from our Michelin wet tyre it was fantastic and really hung on!
We rolled out for qualifying Saturday morning with a wet track, but drying race line. Starting on wets we set a banker lap then pulled in to get the slicks on. Hoping the track would generate a faster dry line by the end of the session. It was like driving on ice! and took 5 laps to generate any real temperature in the slicks, we just started getting into it when we got the flag. We had missed the window on both tyres and qualified dead last! However we were confident about racing and moving forward.
As we sat on the grid prior to the race the rain again started to fall, once we were let go for our warm up lap and race start I made sure I stopped just short of the dry patch the car had made, this was to ensure I could get maximum drive out of my starting grid box.
It was a little unknown for every one how the cars would handle as no one had done any dry laps before. I slowly made my way forward and through the field and got a few free passes as other cars crashed out or came together. We drove from 19th to 10th that race and we’re closer than we had even been to competitive lap times. It placed us mid back to start the next race, we made a few small handling adjustments overnight for the next days races.
I nailed my practise start and warmed up the car well, the real start wasn’t as good, but I was right in the mix of it and already started moving forward through the first few turns. I followed the the snake through turn four and everyone in front had theirs cars sideways on the exit as our tyres were still cold. I got a little too sideways dropped the rear wheel into the dirt which flicked me right round as the other cars raced towards me I was sure I would be T-boned. Miraculously they all missed, but I was not stopped yet as I hit the wet grass instead of slowing I sped up! The wall was coming and then I was in it! it pushed in the front end busting the radiator and inner supports and the right rear took a good blow too. We tried to limp back to the pits when engine warning lights came on so we stopped on the side of the track.
The Matt Stone Racing Team we ready with tools and spares by the time I was towed back to the pits, everyone in the shed was grabbing spanners and trying to help.
The Melbourne Performance Centre team from next door even came in with spare parts and helped out where they could to get it pieced back together enough for us to race. We fixed the radiator, slapped the front end back together stuck on some race tape and sent it! Just in the nick of time to make the line at pit exit and start from pit lane. It was a huge team effort by all to get the car running and start the final race, unfortunately we only made one lap as we had also broken a rear hub and didn’t get the time to replace it. We had to call it and park the car as if was unsafe to drive and would have caused more serious damage.
We showed we have speed and had a really positive race one. The whole process is such a big learning curve and although we didn’t get the ultimate results, its a step forward every-time. I can’t thank Matt and his team, Actron Air and the TCR category for their help and support and hard work both on and off the track. We are working hard towards running at Queensland Raceway in 3 weeks time.
