It was yet another wild weather weekend for the second round of the Mahindra North Island Endurance series at Hampton Downs with heavy rain forecast we prepared to get wet!
Co-driving again with Deon Cooper in the SsangYong Super ute we came away with a rewarding 2nd place.
After our third place 2 weeks ago we really wanted to aim for the win this time round, it was strait into the work shop after the previous round to be pulled apart. Fix the things we didn’t like and improve the things we did. Now reaching over 400HP and improved rear suspension we were optimistic to expect good results. Friday practice was challenging as the ute’s rear end had literally been rebuilt and hadn’t been tested yet. We were really happy with our results from practice and couldn’t wait for Saturday to come round.
Saturday morning brought cold wind, steady rain and a very wet track. Qualifying was tricky but we managed to put the Super Ute on the grid 23rd overall.
The first quarter of the race saw many safety cars as we would race 3 laps then under safety car for 5 or 6, race for another 3 and safety car again. This showed how challenging the rain and slippery track really was as cars would either spin off or crash, we kept our super ute strait and consistent.
At the hour and a half mark it was my turn to take to the wheel. I was ready. Looking down pit lane past all the busyness of other teams zoning into the ute coming towards me. It came to a stop Deon jumps out and I get in. Belts, radio and go go go. The track was very wet. The rain slowed and eventually came to a stop, I was into a nice rhythm and suddenly my gear lever comes completely off in my hands! Stuck in second gear I nursed the car back to the pits and the SsangYong Dealer Team was able to put it back together and get me straight back out there. Losing 3 laps to the lead cars and a drying track I was able to push harder and go a little faster each lap. We were able to gain back position finished the race second place!
Once again there a many people who worked hard behind the scenes and without each other we wouldn’t have had such a successful weekend.
It’s a great feeling to have a hard working team around me and I feel privileged to be a part of the SsangYong Dealer Team. I am looking forward to the next round of the series at Manfield at the end of the month, where we are aiming for the top step on the podium after I have the added advantage over the other drivers as I head to the New Zealand Elite Motorsport Academy next week.
