WHITLEY OPENS THE DOOR TO OPPORTUNITY

Normally on a weekday I am working…. In the office or delivering a car, or running errands. However on Monday the 7th of August I was given a golden opportunity.

I was selected as one of the 10 from many applicants and only female to compete head to head for the CareVets Scholarship in the Toyota 86 Racing Series. I felt privileged to be a part of the day and as always had very high expectations of myself. After a tough day at the office and quickly adapting to a new car I came away turning heads, impressing the right people and a whole new set of doors and opportunities wide open.

Starting the day with a 1 lap dash around the track, I knew I had my work cut out for me racing 9 other long legged boys! By turn 1 they were already 20meters ahead. I pushed through the lactic in my legs, the burning sensation in my lungs and stitch in my chest. I could see some of them stopping ahead as I focused on catching them and not the burning body below. I brought it home 10th, but I was proud of myself for running the whole 3k without stopping, as running isn’t for forte.

Whilst the boys were having their orientation rides, I was interviewed by the CareVets Boss Keith Houston and Toyota Series manager Geoff Short, the pressure was on. I went in confident knowing I was prepared and deep down have the motivation, belief and skill to do what it takes. With a you-bute marketing idea up my sleep I impressed them both and quickly topped the points table.

Next up was a 2 lap dash sitting beside Ryan and Jack who are the previous year’s scholarship winners.

Their skills were impressive as I took in their lines, breaking points and gear changes and most of all the feel of the car under my bum. I had to learn fast. Soon after it was my turn having both Jack and Ryan sit beside me I set the quickest time. Impressing the boys especially after never driving a Toyota 86 before and their engineer too.

After lunch it was time for another fitness test. First up physical strength and endurance, getting on the floor and pumping out push-ups until we couldn’t. The fitness assessor told me I could do “Girl push-ups” I laughed and said “how about I do man ones and when I can’t, I’ll finish with the girl ones.” He said “Deal.” I pumped out 34 real “man push-ups” and finished off with 7 girl ones before I collapsed on the floor; the boys were shocked, and realised I wasn’t just a pretty face and they had to step up their game. Next was a plank hold, a test of your core. 2 minutes in the boys started dropping like flies, and I too started to shake. My elbows pushed the towel along the concrete beneath me and made it difficult to hold still, I dug deep, shook and held on for 4 minutes 15 seconds. After a short break our final test was for our legs. A simple wall sit. Sitting at 90 degrees to the wall, as the time clocked on the boys again slipped down the wall to the floor. My legs were now like a shaker machine vibrating and hurting! And this didn’t seem so simple after all! Determined not to give in I set the 3rd longest time and fell at 5 minutes 30 seconds.

Finally it was the real test of driving ability, skill, speed and consistency. It was my turn to drive. Being shorter than most of the others I had to awkwardly sit with pieces of hard foam behind my back so I could reach the pedals. A bit of uncomfortableness wasn’t going to stop me. Each lap I became more confident and my times dropped faster and faster. I came in knowing I had a competitive time, but also knowing there was still more left in me with more time on track.

I came away 3rd in fitness, 1st in presentation and interview, 1st for driver coaching and Data, 3rd in a 6 lap average lap time and 4th fastest single time.

Unfortunately I didn’t win the overall competition finishing 3rd in extremely close top 3 finish. However the boys had a really tough time keeping up with me and I pushed them harder because of it. I have definitely opened a few doors and many more opportunities.

Congratulations to Liam Lawson for taking out the scholarship and his incredible 10minute wall sit! A massive thanks to Keith, Geoff and the CareVets team for the opportunity and great day. I am feeling more determined than ever and looking forward to my next challenges and open doors. I continue to work hard behind the scenes to make my dream not only a reality but a career.
