The final round of the New Zealand V8 utes was at Hampton Downs over the weekend of the 9th and 10 of March. With our biggest field of the year we had 18 utes on track, we came away finishing on the podium which was an awesome way to end the season.
Practice on Friday was mixed with both dry and wet sessions, most drivers opting out of the rain to keep their utes clean and dry. I pushed a little too hard in the rain and found myself stuck in sand, which we were forever finding all weekend long! We sat in the top 5 of the time sheets throughout practice and we were positive about the weekend ahead. When we woke up Saturday morning for qualifying the rain was lingering and poured just before we went out, we quickly made changes to the car to adapt for the rain and qualified 4th, which we were stocked with! Only haven driven the ute in the rain the day before.
Race one was later that afternoon, I got a great start and launched towards the front row, by turn 2 I was in third place. I made a small mistake and as one ute took advantage of it the others freight trained by my lost momentum.

Race one was later that afternoon, I got a great start and launched towards the front row, by turn 2 I was in third place. I made a small mistake and as one ute took advantage of it the others freight trained by my lost momentum. I battled hard forward and back and finished 7th. Again, we made some changes overnight to find a little more speed to help us in the reverse grid for Sunday mornings race. Starting 4th again I knew exactly where to put the car to get great drive out of the start box. Lights out and we were away! exiting out of the first turn I had jumped into second place. As always, the boys didn’t give any room and we rubbed a few times I fell back to 4th place and finished where I had started.
Heading into the final race I was 5thoverall in the points and the podium wasn’t far away! I thought about the process on how to make my way forward.
The times were extremely close, and we all raced to the mm. Suddenly in front of me 2 utes came together big time and one ended up in the sand, the other too bent to continue on. As the safety car came back in from the clean-up there was one lap to go! I lined up the ute in front and jumped him as the lights went green! He slowly moved over, and I had 2 wheels on the grass driving up the main straight, but I wasn’t backing out. I made the pass stick and came home to finish 3rd place! I just missed out on third overall finishing fourth for the weekend.
The championship was the closest it’s been for 12 years with 30 points splitting the top 6. I came home 3 points behind 5thin 6th place. This was a really positive way to end the season. All season long I worked extremely hard on my starts and qualifying and I’m proud to say I have improved out of sight, the whole season would not have been possible without a lot of key people, sponsors and supporters. I cannot thank you all enough and I’m super excited about the next chapter in my racing career as I strive to make it thought the next round of qualifying for the W Series in Spain next week.
There is a lot of people to credit and too many to write, but I want to make a special mention to the RAM Racing Team for taking me under their wing and sharing years of experience and knowledge with me and to LDV New Zealand for their support all season long, as I would not be racing without their financial backing.
