Over the weekend of the 12th of January, we made the long trek to New Zealand's most highly rated Motorsport Park, Highlands.

Owned and built by Tony Quinn and one of the most professional, but complex tracks in the world! I travelled down a few weeks earlier and spent some time in the Highlands Toyota 86 to ensure when I arrived, I didn’t waste any time learning the lines and I could work on going fast straight out the gate. We had a tough weekend battling with the ute and also receiving some damage, but we came away 7th overall and hungry for more wins.
In the few days off we had over Christmas break we were able to prep the ute after Pukekohe to ensure it was tip top condition and ready for Highlands. My dad flew over early to give us a hand and also offered to drive the 1600km south to deliver the ute to Highlands. LDV NZ lent us a T60 4WD ute, he had the perfect tow car! He slept in a swag in the back of the race ute as our budget was tight then got a flat tyre! but he made it! Thanks Dad!!

We decided to cross enter into the 1 hour “Rush Hour race” so we could have a few extra practices.

I wasn’t 100% happy with the way the ute was handling, but I had full faith in the team and we fine-tuned overnight. Sitting 7th in Qualifying I gave it my all trying to get every last tenth I could find, I cut the curbs through the bus stop to close “bang bang!” I busted both rims on the right-hand side of the car. I pulled over safely to ensure I didn’t cause my tyres more damage, which unfortunately caused a red flag and meant I had to now start from the rear in race 1.
Determined to make amends I slowly carved through the field right from the start, I caught onto the back of 4th an 5th place from a long way back, but had run out of laps before I could pass them too. I finished 6th which placed me 4th for the reverse grid race and I knew I could win from there. I had a shocking start and spun the wheels, it was like I was standing still as everyone swallowed me from all around. I drove my hardest and made my way back to 7th, the boys were really rough and I was hit from just about every direction and we received a lot of damage from this race. I was disappointed, but we still had a race to go, every race so far I had moved forward, I could do it again.

Starting 8th in the final I stalled off the start, I was now last! with 10laps to go, I aimed to pass a ute every lap, I drove back to 7th place.

Which was a great come back, but I know I should have been further up. We really struggled with our handling all weekend and after the damage we received we have a lot ahead of us to prep for Manfeild in a months’ time.
When you aim to win, its disheartening when you don’t. However, this only drives us more to get back on the podium. Everyone in the Team gave their all and sacrificed a great deal to get us to this round and make it happen. I cannot thank you all enough! I now head to Austria for the final qualification into the W Series. I will keep you all posted on how this goes. Then I’m back to tackle the boys again in the V8 utes 3rd round.
