Two of Australia’s best female racers, Alexandra Whitley and Leanne Tander, will join forces for the upcoming SsangYong Racing Series 3 hour endurance event at Pukekohe Park Raceway, in Auckland, next month.
Forget about boys v girls, this new duo is about Aussies versus Kiwis, with this all-Australian team tipped to be the ones to watch at the endurance event. Whitley (24), an emerging talent from Toowoomba, Queensland, has scored multiple podiums and wins in the one-make series that sees competitors contest identical SsangYong Actyon Sport utes throughout New Zealand.
The Pukekohe 3 Hour event marks the final round of the series and, after a post-race rule-change saw Whitley miss out on the endurance win in 2017, despite two podium finishes, she is determined to win this year’s endurance championship title.
“I have always loved long races and, with Leanne as my co-driver, we’re going to be tough to beat,” said Whitley. For Tander, the endurance event marks two firsts in her 20+ year racing career – “I have raced many different categories, at many circuits both here and in New Zealand, but have never raced a SsangYong ute and have never raced at Pukekohe, so it’s really cool to be ticking off two firsts in one weekend,” she said. “Alex is a great driver, so I was really excited that she asked me to drive with her and I think we’re going to be a really strong pairing.”
The pair met in 2015 through a Women of Australian Motor Sport (WAMS) training camp, after Whitley had been awarded the WAMS Junior Development Scholarship.
They have stayed in touch ever since and are both excited to have this opportunity to race together. What a great inspiration for females in motorsport!
This duo is going to be tough to beat and this might just be the start of something great!
