It was the Final round of the SsangYong Series and Endurance Championship, along with the North V South ENEOS Endurance Championship, little did I know that I would come away with my first New Zealand Championship Title.

We raced at Pukekohe Park Raceway on the weekend of the 24th of March. With over 6 hours of racing for me personally. I was physically and mentally prepared and excited to be teaming up with Australian 2016 Formula Ford Champion, Leanne Tander in the Waikato SsangYong, and Deon Cooper in the Super Ute.
Its been a busy month with multiple back to back weekends of racing, along with traveling from one end of the country to the other for work. I have been stretched to get everything done, but thanks to Gary Pederson and Cameron Rydon, I knew my Waikato race ute was in the best hands for its preparation. I made the last few final touches Thursday night. I had also spent time earlier in the week helping Neil to prep the mighty SsangYong Super Ute. It was also ready to race.
Friday was practice for both classes, each time we went out on track it poured with rain. Leanne only had the chance to squeeze in 5 dry laps, but she was right on pace and one of the fastest co-drivers on track. We practiced our pit changes and were fast. We were confident we had a comfortable and consistent enduro car and were looking forward to the weekend ahead. Jumping from one seat to the other I then qualified the SuperUte, in both a dry and wet sessions. It was difficult to pick up a completely different driving style and I struggled most with the braking pressures, but with a few pointers from Paul Manuell, I was right on pace! We qualified 10th overall and 2nd in class.

On Friday morning Leanne and I qualified 11th, although this was further down the ladder than we expected, we were still confident we had a great endurance car.

I started the race well and made my way to 3rd position, the racing was really tough, it was like a 60-minute sprint race! After making a lightning quick driver Leanne came out first place! With the cars so evenly matched and two long straights, there is plenty of rubbing, bump drafting and getting hung out to dry. After experiencing the SsangYong shuffle Leanne lost a few spots and we crossed the line in 11th.
I had to re-hydrate, re-fuel and recover quickly for my next stint in the SuperUte. It was now heavily raining, and I was looking forward to carving my way through the field in the wet. We soon made our way to 1st in class and 8th overall. Unfortunately, with 20mins to go we had problems with our compressor, which meant could not change gears as we run paddle shift. The SDT team worked with quick hands to fix the problem and get us back out on-track. In this time we went a lap down on the leaders and finished 16th overall. Multiple cars in our class had excursions in the rain, so even with our paddle shift fault we still won the weekend. We were crowned Class 1 New Zealand National Endurance Champions! But It wasn’t over yet, I still had one more day of racing to go!
The sun was shining and Leanne and I were pumped for the final 90 minutes of SsangYong Racing for 2018! After drawing 7th in the marble draw, we were off to a great start. Thanks to Cam and his thorough spanner work. The Waikato SsangYong was an absolute weapon for the first half an hour of the race, making my way up to 4th position. I then started to struggle with the handling of the ute as the tyres got hotter and hotter, but with another speedy pit stop and driver change we popped out in 3rd place. It was Leanne’s turn to bring it home, she was holding her ground and not making it easy for others trying to pass. Leanne did a stellar job to bring it to the finish in 8th place. I felt bad for her when I had to hand the ute over, when I knew it wasn’t 100% right.

We both drove incredibly hard and smashed our pit stops, it was a privilege to be teamed up with such an accomplished racer, and to not only fly the Aussie flag, but for all the ladies as well! We were the first females home.

The SsangYong Championship final results have not been released, however we know we have finished inside the top 10. After a flying start to the season with 2nd overall at the first round, to then find myself tangled up in a weekend to forget at round 2. I am happy to have clawed our way back to where we are! I am also very proud to have won my first New Zealand Championship. I am looking forward to my V8 ute final next weekend back at Pukekohe!
