Round 2 of the New Zealand BNT V8’s started our race season for 2020; over the weekend of the 7th to 9th of February. After what seemed like months out of the car over the Christmas break, we almost didn’t make the round due to lack of funding and support. However, thanks to the Richards Team Motorsport crew and some key people we managed to find a way to make the weekend and come away with plenty of podiums, some silverware and champagne to celebrate!

I was really looking forward to the weekend, after the disappointment of working endlessly to find funding and falling short, then having to make the call to pull out of the round, It was music to our ears when found out we could make it. I was focused, determined and ready! I worked hard on my in-car fitness and driving technique over the break. I immediately felt at home in the Richards Toyota Camry TLX, which is powered by a 5L Lexus V8 engine with 560HP! With the help of my engineer Barry, we focused on the process throughout the practises on how to improve, which we did every-time we hit the track.
Qualifying on the front row besides current V8 supercar driver Andre Heimgartner, was the first tick of the box to set up our weekend. The team did an amazing job to ensure the Toyota Camry was fast and reliable. Race 1 began with a rolling start, as we crept towards the start lights and they went green I took off! Racing side by side with Andre through the first 4 turns, it was great to be racing hard, but also giving and having respect for each other the whole way round. It was slippery on the outside, but I was hanging on! I’m here to race and thats exactly what we did. We dragged up the back straight and into the braking area, untill I out broke myself and speared straight ahead! I dropped back to 5th, but pushed on as we made our way back through the field and finished 2nd.

Our next race was another rolling start, I knew what to do and repeated the process from race one. Andre dived in deep on the inside into turn 1 and I dropped in close behind. We both broke away from the field, but he also edged away from me. Halfway through the race we had a safety car and I knew this was my chance to try to get by!

I kept the car warm weaving the tires and warming the brakes. We were soon off again and I was right on his tail and ready to pounce! I turned in and went straight ahead! I hadn’t kept my tires warm enough and almost went off track again. I re-gained the car and chased hard and crossed the line in 2nd.
The final race of the weekend was a standing start, which I had only done once before and that was 3 months ago! Barry (my engineer) helped and talked me through the process before rolling out. The heart was racing and engines revving, I kept calm and rocketed out of the start box! I beat Andre and won “the hole shot!” We raced around the first few turns and he dived under me for the pass. Again chasing him for the rest of the race we cleared the field by the length of the straight crossing the line for another 2nd place finish.

I still have a huge amount to learn and more consistency to find. Its great to be able to compare myself with Andre and keep him honest. Every-race we are improving and edging closer to the top step of the podium.

It was very rewarding to give the Richards Motorsport Team more silverware and champagne to celebrate their help, support and hard work leading up to and throughout the whole event.
As always a huge thanks to everyone behind the scenes we have helped me to make this round, including sponsors supporters, the category and the drivers and their teams. We have a very quick turn around to prep the car for the New Zealand Grand Prix at Manfeild next weekend.
We are still looking for a Naming Right Sponsor, as the sides of the car are looking bare, if you can help the team in anyway big or small, or would just love to be apart of the event. Please feel free to get in touch.
